Piero Lissoni

The Piero Lissoni Story
Piero Lissoni is often thought of as a minimalist designer. However, as part of the Italian school of all-inclusive design, Lissoni actually seems to thrive on complexity. In addition to designing furniture, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting fixtures and other products for the home, Lissoni is also a premier art director, focusing on corporate identity, signage and packaging.
Lissoni's clients are among some of the biggest furniture and design companies in the world. They include Alessi, Boffi, Cappellini, Cassina, Flos, Fritz Hansen, Glas, Kartell, Lema, Living Divani and so on.
Why We Love Piero Lissoni
Piero Lissoni's design principle is to never design for a specific function or purpose but, rather, for human beings. Humanity and all its complexities are what intrigue him and drive him creatively. (So deep is his affection and fascination with the human race that, in a recent interview, Lissoni even said that the greatest compliment he could get is being human.) His minimalist aesthetic is the result of the desire "to create a harmonious blend of different styles by cultivating the art of understatement." This design perspective is influenced by Italian masters Marco Zanuso, Ettore Sottsass, Achille Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti, and Danish modern designers like Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjaerholm.
Noteworthy Products From Lissoni
Lissoni is known for being a full-package kind of designer, creating individual products as part of a greater whole. This means that everything, from furniture and fixtures to the architectural design of a space, would be branded with Lissoni's unique signature style. This is exemplified by the Alessi Birillo bathroom collection, which features everything from a towel stand to a cotton pad dispenser. Lissoni's sleek style is also evident in furniture created for Kartell, including the Audrey Chair, the Lizz Chair and the Form Lounge Chair.
In His Own Words
"I like to work like a child. If I design one small object I am a child with a small toy. If I design a big object, again I'm the same child with one toy, a little bit bigger. I like to live inside this toy's life."
